WRITING TASK 2 - 7.0+ / WALKING LESS

People nowadays walk less than they used to in the past.
Why is this?
What can be done?

In spite of the well-documented health benefits, fewer people walk these days. Technology is the major cause of this issue, and some strategies can be applied to counter it.

The main reason individuals walk less nowadays is tech-related habits. With no computers, smart phones, or internet television, the average person, in the past, might have exercised after work or met up with their friends outside for an active setting on weekends. Now, a sizeable proportion of residents, if not the majority, are more likely to spend time working on their computers or scrolling through their phones, watching videos and immersing themselves in the online world. It is no exaggeration to state that people now tend to prefer the sedentary lifestyle brought on by technology to the active one in the past. Having to migrate a long distance due to the rise in commuting is also worth mentioning as a part of the fact that many people are unable to walk more even if they wish to.

The solution to less walking lies in the ideas that take into consideration current lifestyle changes. People should first educate themselves about the health benefits of walking so they can gradually shift from a passive to a more active life. They can join a walking group or stop driving to places that they could actually walk to. In addition, the government could also encourage companies to move their employees to closer workplaces if possible in order to promote walking to work. These are concrete steps to tackle this issue in the long run.

In conclusion, the convenience of modern technology is the root cause of less walking among people. Self-education and some countermeasures from the government can effectively address it. Individuals themselves, on the other hand, must naturally strive to walk more. (298 words)
