WRITING BAND 7+ / GMOs
One of the most important issues facing the world today is a shortage of food and some think genetically modified foods are a possible solution.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some believe that genetically engineered food is a possible solution to the food demand created by the surging global population. Due to bio-modified foods' ability to increase the quantity and quality of food as well as their environmental friendliness, I completely agree with this idea.
On the one hand, most genetically altered foods have considerably improved production and nutritional value. This is because they are modified to acquire certain desired traits using various scientific approaches. For example, several genetically modified corn crops in Vietnam generate larger fruits with more kernels and greater nutritional content. This results in large increases in grain yields and grain quality, which tremendously benefit both growers and consumers. In contrast, achieving these desirable outcomes without this new food technology would be challenging due to the naturally small size and nutritional insufficiency of numerous crops, such as the corn mentioned in this case.
On the other hand, the majority of GM crops are ecologically friendly. For example, many of them have been genetically modified to produce a kind of toxic protein that is harmful to a number of insects and pests, providing them with natural resistance. By that, the need for pesticides would be eliminated, resulting in a substantial decrease in greenhouse gas emissions associated with their manufacturing, transportation, and application. As a result, the environmental damage caused by previous agricultural pesticide practices will be gradually reduced.
In conclusion, I totally agree that biotechnology food is a potential avenue for the world's growing food demand challenges. This is because they not only increase food quantity and enhance its nutrient composition but also significantly reduce the need for pesticides, which has a beneficial effect on the environment. This GM food research should continue in the future. (288 words)
